Spotted hyenas are the largest of three hyena species. Brown and striped hyenas are the other two. Although hyenas appear similar to dogs, they are actually more closely related to cats. They live throughout much of Africa and eastwards through Arabia to India.

What is a hyena classified as?

Though many people compare hyenas to dogs, they are actually much more like cats. In fact, they are members of the suborder Feliformia, which is a classification for cat-like carnivores, according to Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). There are four species in the hyena family, and they vary in size.

By taxonomy, hyenas are closer to cats than dogs. Hyenas are part of the Order Carnivora together with cats and dogs, but hyenas and cat are part of the Suborder Feliformia. A few genetic analysis have show that cats and hyenas share a more recent commune ancestor and therefore they are closer related.
